Agriculture is an important contributor to Jamaica’s economic development. Though the average age of the Jamaica farmers is no longer 60 years old there is concern that many youngsters do not see the sector as a viable economic option. If this does not change Jamaica could face serious farming shortage. The ministry of agriculture is working to make agricultural jobs a desirable career path. One such initiative is the youth in agriculture program established in 2017 the Youth in Agriculture Programme provides resources and expertise to youngsters in the agriculture sector. A youth in in Agriculture Policy has also been developed. Agriculture Minister, Floyd Green, has mandated Agro-Investment corporation to reserve at least 20 per cent of available arable lands for leasing to youngsters who are a part of the youth in agriculture initiative..
