African swine fever (ASF), which has reportedly resulted in the death of millions of pigs across the world, has been detected in the Dominican republic. Though not known to affect humans the disease could deal a serious blow to Jamaica’s pig industry. As a result Jamaica is on African swine fever alert. Chief Veterinary Officer at the Veterinary Services Division of the Agriculture & Fisheries ministry, Dr. Osbil Watson says if found in Jamaica it will have implications for Jamaica's pork industry.
