The Ministry of Labour and Social Security continues to host a series of island wide regional roadshows. This is part of the Ministry’s continued thrust for greater public awareness in providing information on contemporary issues regarding labour relations and decent work. The next event will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Golf View Hotel, 5 ½ Caledonia Rd, Mandeville, Manchester. The event will accommodate approximately five hundred (500) in-person participants in both the information sessions and job fair, and several persons locally and in the diaspora through the live-stream. The theme for the information session, Transforming Jamaica’s Workforce for Greater Resilience and Sustainable Development, has continued throughout the 2024/2025 roadshow series and is especially pertinent as Jamaica hits record low unemployment (STATIN 3.5% OCT 2024). The Opening ceremony will feature discussions with the United States Embassy related to the seasonal employment programme. Amidst the looming anxieties relating to the United States adjustments to its immigration approach, the roadshow presents an opportunity for persons from the Jamaican diaspora to learn more about doing business in Jamaica as either investors or entering the labour market as workers. The opportunities of the newly launched Just Transition project for environmental sustainability will be central to the discussions. This Jamaica Just Transition project will integrate principles related to decent work and labour market principles with inclusive national development policies of Jamaica by 2026 including nationally determined contributions due to be updated 2025/2026. In this regard, there will also be a panel discussion on Climate Change in Jamaica examining the application from a tripartite perspective.
