According to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica’s (STATIN) July 2020 Labour Force Survey, the unemployment rate was 12.6 per cent, 4.8 percentage points higher than July 2019. STATIN also reported that 57 percent of Jamaican households had reduced income between the onset of COVID-19 in March and September. In the midst of this economic upheaval, the Students’ Loan Bureau, says it has seen a five percent (5%) increase in loan applications. Gabrielle Thompson reports.
