The Ministry of Local Government & Community Development and The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is currently leading a series of consultations towards finalizing Jamaica’s Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Policy (JCDRMP) 2024-2044. The policy was approved as a Green Paper (draft policy) by Parliament on July 19, 2022. As part of the process to finalise the Policy and to move it to a White Paper (final policy) a town hall consultation meeting is being hosted to invite the public to share perspectives. This will take place on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Girl Guides Association of Jamaica Headquarter, 2 Waterloo Road, Kingston 10, from 6 -8 pm. During the Town Hall Meeting, we look forward to examining the policy framework – including the guiding principles, goals and strategies of the policy – and hearing the public’s views and perspectives and obtaining their inputs on areas that should be included in the policy. Jamaica’s Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Policy (JCDRMP) 2024-2044 is Jamaica’s first long-term national disaster risk management policy and is strategically designed to ensure that by 2044, Jamaica has strengthened its resilience, significantly reducing and where feasible eliminating the negative effects that are likely to arise from hazards, including those induced by climate change. The development and promulgation of the JCDRMP is a major step towards achieving sustainable development in Jamaica by 2044.
