A Poet Laureate is generally selected from amongst a country’s most esteemed and accomplished poets. He/She occupies an exalted position in the nation’s literary heritage. Before April 2014, there had been two Poets Laureate of Jamaica selected by the Poetry League of Jamaica. Tom Redcam received the honour posthumously from 1910 to 1933. J.E.C. McFarlane, who was founder and President of the Poetry League Society of Jamaica, was crowned and robed as Poet Laureate at a ceremony held at the Ward Theatre on April 7, 1953. He served in his role until he died in 1962. In 2014, The Poet Laureate of Jamaica Programme was re-established through the combined efforts of the National Library of Jamaica, the Literary Arts Sub-committee of the Entertainment Advisory Board and The Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment (now the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport). The Poet Laureate Programme is now an established Programme of the National Library of Jamaica (NLJ), and the Poet Laureate Committee reports to the Board of Management. Nominations for the Poet Laureate of Jamaica are made by public votes submitted on a prescribed form. Nominations which meet the stated criteria are then considered by a nine-member committee and the Laureate is selected by secret ballot. On May 14, 2014, Professor Mervyn Morris, OM, was invested as the first nationally appointed Poet Laureate of Jamaica. Professor Morris served a three-year term from 2014 to 2017. Lorna Goodison, CD, was invested on May 17, 2017, as Poet Laureate of Jamaica and served from 2017 to 2020 May 17, 2017, followed by Miss Olive Senior, who served from 2021 to 2024. Having led a successful tenure of promoting and supporting the nation’s literary arts. Ms. Senior demitted office as Poet Laureate in 2024. The Poet Laureate Programme is tasked with stimulating a greater appreciation for Jamaican poetry while aiming to develop mass appeal for poetry as an art and a medium for disseminating our cultural heritage. The Poet Laureate is tasked with creating an avenue for public involvement in the spoken arts by stimulating the writing of poetry and improving youth appreciation of poetry.
