June 1 is celebrated as World reef awareness day. Coral reefs reportedly cover less than 1 percent of oceans but support over 25 percent of all marine life. There has been significant damage to Jamaica’s coral reefs over the past thirty years due to the combined effects of human influences, poorly planned coastal developments, over-fishing and hurricanes. Efforts to protect and restore Jamaica’s reef systems include bringing dead reefs back to life through coral farming.
