At the local launch held today (April 18) at the Hilton Kingston hotel, Executive Director of the National Road Safety Council, Paula Fletcher explained that Road Safety Week is being observed globally because of the growing concern for the heavy socio-economic impact of road traffic injuries, which serve to counter sustainable development.

It is being convened by several institutions of the United Nations including the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, UNECLAC, UNECE, PAHO/WHO as well as the the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and organised by Jamaica's Ministry of Transport and the National Road Safety Council .
